Villagrande Strisaili
S’Arcu ‘e is Forros
Description
The sanctuary-village of S’Arcu ‘e is Forros is located near the town of Villagrande Strisaili, between Ogliastra and Barbagia.
It is a vast area that was frequented from the early phases of nuraghic civilisation (1500-1400 BCE) until the start of the fifth century BCE.
Within the built-up area, there are two large megaron temples, which were the main religious buildings and linked to religious practices that included ritual ablutions, votive offerings and ceremonial offerings involving fire.
Numerous finds linked to the cult were unearthed in these temples, including small figurative bronzes, votive swords and decorated pottery, and the spaces themselves feature altars shaped like nuraghs and architectural elements sculpted to resemble stylised ram’s heads.
Two groups of rooms arranged around a central paved courtyard were found near these cult sites.
Used for living space, workshops and storage, an astonishing quantity of finds were discovered in these rooms, including incense boats, weaponry, large containers, copper ingots, fragments of bronze, iron and lead, fragments of bronze swords, buttons, thin sheets of metal, small figured bronzes and a large number of imported objects, such as a faïence scarab, bronze fibulae from various places across the Italian peninsula, a bronze symbol of the goddess Tanit and an amphora with an inscription in archaic Phoenician lettering.
Recent excavations at the site have unearthed an important structure with terraced steps that might have been used for large gatherings, possibly for ceremonial purposes.
