Nuraghic Sanctuary of Janna 'e Pruna and Su Notante
Description
The nuraghic temple of Janna ‘e Pruna is located near the pass by the same name.
The structure is built of blocks of expertly worked local granite arranged in regular rows. One entered through an almost rectangular atrium that leads to a circular cell with a central hearth and a bench along the wall.
During their excavation of the site, archaeologists unearthed fragments of ceramic vessels and a few bronze ex votos, including a votive sword, a dagger, a small bronze deer antler and a fragment of a copper ingot.
The temple was surrounded by a sacred enclosure that included an elliptical courtyard where the votive offerings were left.
A very short walk from Janna ‘e Pruna takes you to the sacred fountain of Su Notante, dedicated to the nuraghic water cult and built on a still active spring.
The fountain, which was built using expertly cut blocks of basalt, was partially demolished in the 1920s during construction of an aqueduct. What remains is part of the monumental facade, which rests on the natural rock surrounding the perennial spring.
The monument is dated between the end of the Bronze Age and beginning of the Iron Age (1200 to 1000 BCE).
