Meana Sardo
Nuraghe Nolza Archaeological Complex

Description

Nuraghe Nolza, located 739 metres above sea level, looks out over a vast area, offering a picturesque panoramic view of Sardinia’s tallest mountains and the sea.
It is believed that the original settlement was a hut village that was inhabited until about 1500 BCE and extended for about two hectares, although only part of it has been studied.

The quadrilobate complex reveals multiple construction phases, including the erection of the main tower, the addition of the four perimeter towers with their relative walls and the opening of a new entrance protected by a masonry structure adjacent to the east and north towers.

During the first phase, the monument was built using schist, a local stone. Later, in about 1100 BCE, the fragile, collapsing monument was restored. Two of the towers were rebuilt using a harder stone, porphyry, and the interior spaces were partially modified. The entrance was moved from the east wall to the west one.

The new entrance leads to a space that opens onto Tower D and the stair of twenty-one, well preserved, steep steps, which in turn lead to a small, elevated courtyard that was once paved with a combination of stone, schist, cork leaves and a thick layer of terracotta. The small courtyard opens onto the first level of the perfectly preserved tholos.

The height of the surviving part of the main tower at its highest point is between twelve and thirteen metres.

Nuraghe Nolza, which was originally buried, has been the site of practically continuous excavation campaigns since the 1990s.

The archaeological complex is easy to reach, about eight kilometres south of Meana Sardo, along a route taking you through picturesque Barbagia landscapes, Mandrolisai vineyards and intriguing Meano Sardo forests.
