Description

The Museo MAMA - Museo d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea Atzara (Museum of Contemporary and Modern Art), in the province of Nuoro, is dedicated to the Spanish painter Antonio Ortiz Echagüe.

The opening of a modern and contemporary art museum in a small town on the island is explained by the events that brought two Spanish Costumbrista painters to Atzara in the early twentieth century: Eduardo Chicharro y Agüera and Antonio Ortiz Echagüe, who were drawn there by the local customs and traditions.

The museum, which was inaugurated in August 2000, is located in Atzara’s old town, in the rooms of an entirely restored nineteenth-century building.

The picture gallery hosts an interesting collection of twentieth-century Sardinian paintings, by artists including Antonio Ortiz Echagüe, Antonio Ballero, Filippo Figari, Antonio Corriga, Antonio Mura, Costantino Spada, Mario Delitala, Pietro Antonio Manca, Mauro Manca and others.

The museum’s education department, founded in 2008, creates itineraries that promote awareness and appreciation of artistic and cultural heritage, concentrating on artists who have had a significant impact on the history of twentieth-century painting.
