Atzara
Description
Atzara is a hill town, surrounded by picturesque, flourishing vineyards.
The acidic granite and porphyry soil, favourable climate and sun exposure all contribute to the unique quality of the wine from Atzara’s hills. Besides vineyards, the landscape is also dotted with farmland, fruit trees and oaks. The paths winding through the countryside lead to majestic chestnut, hazelnut and walnut groves, all nuts used in the production of local sweets.
Atzara’s charm also includes historical and cultural treasures. Its ancient roads lead to medieval stone houses, picturesque churches like those of San Giorgio and Sant’Agostino and the residence of the counts of San Martino.
Standing out among them is the parish church of Sant’Antioco Martire, which was built between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in the Catalan Gothic style.
The light and hues of Atzara were a source of inspiration for Spanish Costumbrista painters in the early twentieth century.
One of the town’s gems is the MAMA Museo d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea. Dedicated to Antonio Ortiz Echagüe, the museum’s collection covers a range of twentieth-century art movements.
Visit Atzara for a fascinating mix of tradition, art, gastronomy and nature.
