Description
The Museo delle Maschere Mediterranee, Mamoiada is divided into two thematic sections that compare the ritual arts of Barbagia with those of other parts of the Mediterranean.
The Barbagia section introduces the masks and traditional costumes of Mamuthones and Issohadores (from Mamoiada) Boes, Merdules and Filonzana (Ottana) and Thurpos (Orotelli). The collection includes old wooden hand-carved masks from Mamoiada and Ottana.
The Mediterranean section displays masks and costumes from Alto Adige, Friuli, Portugal, Spain, Bulgaria, Greece, Slovenia and Croatia.
The contemporary practice of the ritual of Mamuthones e Issohadores in Mamoiada is narrated through a multi-screen projection.
It is a moving account of the community spirit of Mamoiada, preparing new generations to pass down the myth of Mamuthones e Issohadores, which has become known across the globe.
During the twelve-minute screening, narrated by Bachisiu Bandinu, a scholar of Sardinian culture and language, you are caught up in a mysterious, engaging atmosphere as you meet the men who transform themselves, the artisans who carve the wood and children getting ready for the initiation ritual.
