Bitti
The Nuraghic Complex at Romanzesu
Description
The nuraghic village at Romanzesu is located in the municipality of Bitti.
It is an important archaeological site preserving the remains of an ancient nuraghic settlement dating to the Bronze Age, as far back as the fourteenth century BCE.
It is one of Sardinia’s most picturesque archaeological sites and extends across several hectares.
Standing out among the varied religious and secular buildings is a sacred well connected to a system of stepped basins that probably served to provide participants with the water needed for ritual ablutions.
The site at Romanzesu is rich with fascinating evidence of the social, economic and cultural organisation of the nuraghic civilisation. The architecture reveals notable building skill, including the use of carefully worked stones and precisely planned spaces.
The nuraghic village at Romanzesu is currently open to visitors thanks to the Istelai cooperative and is an invaluable source of information about the culture and history of ancient Sardinia.
