Gavoi
Museo etnografico casa Porcu Satta
Description
The museum is housed in a typical aristocratic residence that was built in 1901 and once home to Dr Giovanni Porcu, district doctor of Gavoi and Ollolai.
The rooms on the first and second floors were frescoed by the decorative painter Mollinari. The frescoes are perfectly preserved.
The ‘Stanza Ciusa’ (Ciusa Room) is decorated with Sardinian furnishings designed by the sculptor Francesco Ciusa.
The Art Deco doors and balcony are important examples of early twentieth century artisanship and are included on the regional cultural heritage list.
The exhibits on display at Casa Porcu Satta tell stories of work, play, music, dance, mourning, celebration, religiosity and superstition through original objects, faithful reproductions and local crafts.
The section on traditional costume includes clothing for celebrations, traditional costume for men and the typical velvet clothing worn by shepherds and farmers.
The section on jewellery features about 100 pieces in filigree, including amulets, rosaries, buttons and other traditional accessories. The jewellery was made by the master goldsmith Nanni Rocca, who is carrying on a family tradition that dates back to the nineteenth century.
The section on traditional toys includes objects made by parents for their children and toys made using local materials.
The music section features instruments, old and new, used for playing traditional music.
Lastly, the section on work includes a scale reconstruction of traditional workspaces and tools for farming and sheep breeding.
