Dorgali
Archaeological Complex at Tiscali
Description
The settlement at Tiscali is an important archaeological site located in the mountains in the Dorgali region.
Dating back to the nuraghic age, it is known for its unique, enchanting location, situated in a doline – a kind of basin surrounded by rocky walls.
The settlement’s spaces and rooms are found on both the north and south-west sides of the doline. The structures are rectangular, square, circular and elliptical in plan. The walls were built with lightly worked local stone and mortar made out of a mixture of clay-rich soil, pebbles and organic materials. The mortar was used to fill the spaces between the stones and then smoothed. Little spaces and niches were built into the walls for keeping objects. Some of the structures are shaped like a truncated cone, with protruding walls, and might have been covered with a false dome called a tholos or vegetal material like trunks and branches.
It is not yet clear why the Tiscali settlement was abandoned, but it was probably for strategic reasons or linked to changes in the culture’s social and political structure.
Today, the site at Tiscali is a major tourist attraction and destination for archaeology and Sardinian history enthusiasts.
