Acquario di Cala Gonone
Description
The Acquario di Cala Gonone, designed by Peter Chermayeff and Sebastiano Gaias, is an example of the perfect integration of modern architecture into its natural surroundings, in this case the Gulf of Orosei.
Surrounded by a stunning park of Mediterranean scrub, the aquarium is devoted to environmental conservation and hosts more than 300 species, most of which come from the gulf.
The building was constructed out of recycled materials, like the granular glass in the filter systems, and uses low-energy technologies. Choices that highlight the structure’s commitment to sustainability and respect for the environment.
Also known as the Sardinia Aquarium, it counts twenty-five tanks, more than 300 sea creatures and 450,000 litres of water. You can admire the piranhas and Pistacchio the chameleon, explore the depths of the Mediterranean Sea, the rocky coasts and their incredible inhabitants and the biodiverse warm tropical seas.
You can also immerse yourself in fresh water and touch rays, starfish and dogfish in the touch tank. Outside, surrounded by fragrant Mediterranean scrub, you will find the enclosure of Rosa Fumetta, a female fox who stands as a symbol of the victims of forest fires.
Along the visitors’ path, informational panels raise awareness of the serious problems facing the marine ecosystem, like plastic pollution and unsustainable fishing.
The aquarium also offers guided tours and educational workshops for school groups, in which students have the opportunity to learn about protecting the environment, biodiversity and sustainable consumption. The main themes are plastic pollution in the seas, recycling and separate collection of waste.
