Villagrande Strisaili
Description
Villagrande Strisaili is set in a picturesque location, nestled in the mountains of the Gennargentu massif, in the deepest part of Ogliastra, with a panoramic view of the gulf of Arbatax.
The area is home to numerous archaeological sites, including a few nuraghs and unique megalithic structures typical of prehistoric Sardinia, attesting to its long history.
The main nuraghic site is s’Arcu ‘e is Forros, a sanctuary-village that preserves traces of nuraghic civilisation, attesting to the area’s cultural development from the early Bronze Age to the Iron Age and contact with other civilisations.
Another noteworthy site is Sa Carcaredda, where an ancient temple, a vast settlement and four massive Giants’ Tombs, as well as numerous votive objects, attest to the religious and commercial importance of the area around the village during the nuraghic age.
The main church is the parish church of San Gabriele and the saint’s feast is celebrated here on the first of August.
On Palm Sunday, there is a religious procession between San Gabriele and the church of Santu Giaccu to commemorate the triumphal entry of Christ into Jerusalem.
Villagrande Strisaili is also known for its culinary specialities, including is culurgiones (ravioli filled with potatoes and pecorino cheese) and its famous ham.
