Sas Concas Necropolis

Description

The Sas Concas necropolis is the largest underground Neolithic-Chalcolithic complex in Barbagia, with about twenty tombs, some arranged in groups, others isolated.

The tombs have chambers, access corridors, antechambers and symbolic elements like little hollows for offerings, niches, hearths and pillars.

The most important tombs are the Hemicycle Tomb and the North-West Tomb, which are embellished with symbolic and architectonic decoration.
The decoration includes numerous petroglyphs depicting stylised human figures with raised arms, arranged like anchors or candelabras, carved into the walls in an upside-down position to symbolise death or in any case some other sacred meaning.

Another frequent image linked to the sacred sphere is the cup, which is for the most part connected to the female divinities portrayed in many of the Sas Concas tombs but also found across the island on menhirs and baetyls.
