Mamoiada
Sanctuary of Santi Cosma e Damiano, Mamoiada
Description
The sanctuary of SS Cosma e Damiano in Mamoiada, also known as the sanctuary of San Cosimo, is considered the oldest church in Barbagia.
In keeping with the tradition of Greek religious villages, the church is surrounded by cumbessias, simple lodgings for pilgrims and the faithful celebrating the novena that have been renovated, expanded and rebuilt over the centuries.
Inside the church, there is a seventeenth-century pink trachyte niche and a few Byzantine-style frescoes.
The church is also decorated with the fourteen Stations of the Cross in glazed ceramic, which were made in Spain in the second half of the eighteenth century by Jacinto Causada.
The date and artist who made the tiles were only recently discovered, although they were admired all over the world in 1998 during the Via Crucis officiated by John Paul II at the Colosseum.
Every year, the feast of Sts Cosmas and Damian is celebrated on 27 September, with cultural, folkloric, musical and equestrian events that draw visitors from across the region.
