The archaeological complex of Gremanu
Description
The archaeological complex of Gremanu, one of Sardinia’s most important nuraghic sites, is spread out over a slope, extending more than seven hectares.
It comprises a series of springs and wells for collecting water, a village with a sacred area, a necropolis of giants’ tombs and various religious buildings.
The buildings include a rectangular basin for ritual ablutions, a circular well, a single tower nuragh with a circular room containing bronze finds and a structure with a trabeated entrance, a circular room with traces of smelting activity and a wall decorated with incisions and heads in relief; bronze votive swords were inserted at the top.
There are also small ‘megaron’ temples with rectangular plans and a vestibule.
The complex dates to the Bronze Age and was built on top of a previous settlement.
