Speranza Ladu (b. Sarule, 1934) is a celebrated Italian weaver.
Speranza Ladu
Description
In 1957, she was among the weavers from Sarule involved in the professional courses organised by the Istituto Sardo Organizzazione Lavoro Artigiano (Sardinian Institute for the Organisation of Artisan Labour) which, thanks to the visionary artistic direction of Eugenio Tavolara, contributed to the production of new textile collections.
Still an active weaver, Ladu continues to make use of her expert skills, sharing her knowledge and the unique characteristics of the textile tradition in Sarule, where a vertical loom is used to create Sa Burra (colourful rugs in Sardinian wool that were given to first-borns on their wedding days) and a wide range of rugs and tapestries designed by Eugenio Tavolara.
With the textile cooperative of Sarule (no longer active), she collaborated on the artistic textile projects of artists like Costantino Nivola, among others.
There is a rug from that series on view in the permanent collection of the Museo Nivola.
