Description

Michelangelo Pira (b. Bitti, 5 July 1928–d. Quartu Sant’Elena, 3 June 1980) was an Italian writer and anthropologist.

An influential figure in late twentieth-century Sardinian culture, he was one of the first and most devoted scholars of Sardinian and its problems.

He played an important role as official of the regional council and professor of cultural anthropology at Cagliari. Besides writing plays and poetry, he produced radio programmes that valorised the Bitti dialect with vigour and elegance in equal measure.

In works like Sardegna tra due lingue (Sardinia between two languages) and La rivolta dell'oggetto (the object’s revolt), he addressed the theme of bilingualism and diglossia, emphasising the need for a revolution so that the Sardinian populace could be active and self-determined.

His posthumous volume Sos Sinnos, a novel written in the Bitti dialect, according to pronunciation rather than correct spelling, was met with wide acclaim.
