Peppino Mereu (b. Tonara, 14 January 1872–d. Tonara, 11 March 1901) was one of the most important poets writing in Sardinian.
Giuseppe Mereu
Description
Known as Su misteriosu, he broke the mould of Arcadia and traditional Sardinian poetry. He used a mix of languages, combining the Arcadian Logudorese with Sardinian and Italian. Although a certain cynicism shines through in his work, it is also marked by an underlying melancholy.
He is famous for the poem Nanneddu meu, a reflection on the mood of Sardinians in the face of social change.
A complex, enigmatic figure, his work would have remained unknown if it hadn’t been for Nanni Sulis, who transcribed his poems against his wishes.
